Packed with dramatic imagery, a Cormac McCarthy influence is apparent in McCumaskey's prose and some of the otherworldly passages invoke flashes of H.P Lovecraft. Plot-wise, The Carrion Sea brings to mind the classic Beowulf and draws on themes such as perseverance, rebirth and sacrifice. This is a compelling debut from a clearly talented author.
