I was stuck on the first page until I read it a couple of times, acclimating to the setting and the darkness/dread therein perhaps, before chugging through the rest of this short story like I was in a race. Maiden's Preyer is captivating and carries the suspense all the way to the last paragraph. Then the Afterword confirms a theme so necessary in today's climate, approached from a place of determination for change rather than fear of it. I love this bold and bloody story, and I'm excited to read more of Kelly's adventures.
