The core of this book is a short (4-5 page) essay on the development of the race for D&D. It is smart and helpful, but it is really just an introduction to the two short stories (one by Lord Dunsany and one by Margaret St Clair) that existed before D&D, which are also included here.

Certainly worth reading, but not really a game product and the "revised and expanded" edition is only a short, fun but definitely light contribution.

Having always liked Gnolls for some odd reason, I eagerly delved into this publication! I found this most excellent and to quote another reviewer.. fun as well! Kudos to the author for this. Well done!

I found this to be very informative in regards to the origins of Gnolls. It was very clear in writing style and I found myself able to dip in and out very easily (since I was following the better half around on a shopping spree and was reading it on my phone). Points and facts were clearly backed up with direct references to where the author had obtained the information, and the quoted parts were clearly labelled.

The only bad parts I could really poke about was that it seemed to be over a tad too quickly. The pacing of the overall document seemed to get into the real essence of what Gnolls were all about, and then suddenly it was over. Not being an author myself however I cannot really offer advice on how this could have been avoided.

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable read.

I expected A Brief History of Gnolls to be an interesting read, and it is. But more than that it's FUN. Much more than just a brief review of the creature itself, this piece takes a close look at references to gnolls in fiction and the gaming world and makes a convincing case of the connections between the various (and sometimes very physically different) beings bearing the name "gnoll". Loved all the detail, and the amusing choice of quotes about the gnoll. Gives an excellent feel for the creature while looking at its creation-history.

Well-written, clearly presented, and definitely worth a download and a read. The graphics are a fun complement, especially the Gnitted Gnoll.

Recommended!
