A retelling of the ancient story that inspired not only Tolkien, but also some fairy tales and legends. The art style and coloring takes a bit of getting used to, but once you do it's surprisingly effective.

A wonderful addition to the immortal cast of the Valiant universe. It's great to see a fresh take on the "immortal warrior" idea. Fans of Gail Simone's run on Red Sonja will find a lot to love in this.

An endless parade of profanity, racial insults, and violence. Feels like a 90s Image comic, in all the wrong ways. Suitable for people who really, really need to prove how much they hate Twilight.

It is, basically, a big 80s action movie as a comic book, plus a ghost love story. On the one hand, the comic knows what it is, and the art delivers on that front: you get R-rated nudity, blood and gore, and lots and lots of well-illustrated action. On the other hand, the story is fairly predictable after the first chapter, and a lot of outdated racial stereotypes really drag the whole thing down. It really depends on what you're looking for.

A noir retelling of the legend of Robin Hood, where no one is a "good guy" and the Sheriff of Nottingham is stuck in the middle of a lot of bad people's ambitions. Strong V for Vendetta vibes as well.

This starts off are a fairly traditional fantasy RPG setup (five adventurers of diverse talents hunting down a monster), but about halfway through there's a twist and a truckload of political intrigue gets introduced. An interesting introduction to the Battlecats world, even if the comic is a bit thin with lots of pages with only one or two panels.

Another interesting team of Valiant's not-mutants called psiots. It's got a strong vibe of Umbrella Academy or Doom Patrol: a collection of kids with strange powers are on the run, but their powers and the things they face are distinctly surreal and bizarre. In issue #3, for example, an elaborate Archie Comics homage ends up being a significant plot point. Definitely worth a read if you like high school drama and weird storytelling.

A neat little multiverse storyline, and a surprise sequel to the Ivar, Timewalker series. Unfortunately, the whole thing feels a bit rushed -- it would have benefitted from a few more issues to help readers care about the core characters, and lay the groundwork for some of the twists so they don't come out of nowhere. Still, if you dig stuff like the Loki TV show or Doctor Who, it's worth a read.

The latest (and unfortunately last) volume of Britannia. This one takes place in Egypt primarily, but the intersection of mystical thinking, logical detection, and political intrigue isn't lost.

Another great volume of Britannia. This one takes place inside Rome, allowing the Detectioner to mingle with the class and gender politics of the time. If you liked the first volume, this second one is just as good.

Although put out by Valiant, this isn't a superhero comic. It's more of a historical horror mystery, featuring Antonius Axia, the world's first detective. The story moves effortlessly between Sherlock Holmes induction tricks and outright fantasy, never quite clarifying whether the whole thing is genuinely magical or actually based in reality. It's self-contained, so it makes for a nice, tight read.

I admittedly mainly got this for the amazing A.H.A.B. strip collected in the back, but the whole issue is classic Dredd. Well worth a few bucks to pick up over a hundred pages of material!

A blending of tons of Victorian horror and Gothic fiction, along with a touch of Loki'a Time Variance Agency. In fact, the time travel elements were implied to be a big part of the story, but they only really matter in the very beginning and very end of this collection. Still, fans of the Castlevania series, Vampire Hunter D, and the Darkstalkers video games/comics will enjoy this.
(Bonus points for having Romani characters and never once using the word g*psy.)

One part D&D-style comic adventure, one part drama about a group of friends struggling to come to terms with the changes in their life. An excellent story!

A fun comic about the drama of a small pro wrestling promotion. A bit rushed near the end -- it probably needed one more issue -- but definitely a must-read for any wrestling fan.
