Forbidden Lands: Card Deck
Publisher: Free League Publishing
by Jeffrey G. [Verified Purchaser]

With the fronts in one PDF and the backs in another, and with each card it is own page, there is no good way I can see to print these. Even printing multiple per page with a built-in function of my PDF reader, unless I manually feed the prints back in (and correctly which is no guarantee) to get the backs, it is an amazing level of hassle. There is no way I would buy this PDF. Fortunately for me, it came as part of a PDF bundle, but it is still pretty sad that they are published this way. Would not recommend at any price due to being essentially useless to me.

Superlatives Core Rulebook

This is a terrific new supers RPG that does everything based on Precedents and simple descriptions of your powers or skills. You never have to consult a long list of powers, everything you need can be found on your character sheet. It also has a sweet way of interlinking the backstories of the heroes that form the PCs group by way of individual "Issues" that happen prior to the first session of the game and then continue to happen between game sessions, which is an innovative touch I've seen nowhere else. The only downside, if I were to have to pick one, is that combat damage is oddly arbitrary and can make for long slogs. I did a bit of house-ruling on that front to speed things up a bit by eliminating a seperate damage roll and having damage be related to how much you made the attack roll by, and that helps. But that is a small holdover from old-school kinds of games and is easily tweaked. The author also has made a vast library of sourcebooks and settings, all of which were seen by the Kickstarter backers and definitely add value if you are looking for a setting rather than adapting the game to a setting you already have. Also, I should note that because of the descriptor-based way everything is handled, adapting any existing property to Superlatives is a breeze! This does a fine job of emulating it's genre and, at least in my opinion as a collector of super-hero RPGs, is a must-buy! EDIT: I have decided that while I'd love to give it a 4.75 if such a thing were possible, this is the best supers game I've seen come down the pike in a long time, my own homebrew included, and I bumped my grade up to 5 stars! It takes a lot to get me to consider to forego my own homebrew game!

Blade and Lockpick. A game engine for solo and two player games
Publisher: Nordic Weasel Games
by Jeffrey G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/04/2019 00:01:31

I have been looking for a good solo engine for awhile now and nothing has fully stuck with me. But this one is proving to be an interesting exception. I have decided to use it to model a super-hero game. So far I have created a team of four heroes who have been patrolling. I am using the "Oracle" for some of the narrative beats and a hodge-podge of "Super Hero Mission Generators" from around the web that I am adapting for use with this game. I am four days (a dozen patrols) into my quartet's adventures, and so far they've saved a villain (unknown to the general populace) from a vengeful new hero (in a very close battle indeed!), thwarted a robbery, and saved an airliner (carrying the very same as-yet-unknown villain) from a vandalism-caused crash! The battles and the rescue have been generally close, and I have been using minions or bystanders to fill out the teams- in the case of the latter, they don't fight, but they do sometimes take hits that might otherwise have struck down a hero or bad-guy. The system is working pretty well for me so far! My only complaint, really, is that there's a -lot- of wasted space on many pages- it probably takes a third more paper to print than it should based on the content. All in all, this has been fun and is inspiring some great solo play!

These are terrific for a lighter tone of a game or for young gamers! I made standees of them and use them in a board game instead of the dull pawns it came with! I would love to see more characters and monsters in this style and would gladly buy additional sets were they available!

I wish it were clearer that this is nowhere near 28mm scale. At least this one has a grid, unlike the other one in this line. But it is still of basically no use to me and it has the same problem the other one does- random cars and stuff just plopped on the map. I want to place my own stuff, if you want to insist that there are cars, make them optional cutouts you can lay on the map.

This is not at all like many of the other releases in the line. Some folks have already mentioned the less-than-handy random vehicle in the middle of the street issue- so that's not very helpful- but my biggest gripe is there's no grid! The second City Blocks release fixed that problem, but honestly this product is of zero use to me. How can these guys put out a map like this without a 1-inch grid or hex! I am sorely disappointed.

INDEX CARD RPG Vol. 1
Publisher: RUNEHAMMER GAMES
by Jeffrey C G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/06/2017 11:36:13

This is a nice little set and the YouTube video to go with it certainly explains a very nice old-school "theatre of the mind" way of gaming without a battlemat (watch it if you haven't yet). There is perhaps a touch too much repetition in one or two areas, but in general this is a terrific set! My only other "criticism" might be to make an option for adding cut-lines. I am terrible with a hobby knife, so I use a scrapbooking photo-trimmer, and these would get to my table quicker if the lines were there. But neither of these small quibbles is enough for me to even dock a star on my rating as this is just such a good idea for a product! I even made a simple 3x5 template in Word and made some new cards of my own to augment the set. The art is charming (and pretty printer-ink economical being just bold line drawings as opposed to full-color pictures), there is a lot of variety and there are so many ways a GM can use these cards! These are certainly going to be added to my bag of tricks!

Morgalad Fantasy RPG Creature Compendium
Publisher: McNabb Games
by Jeffrey C G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/02/2015 11:38:23

I was given a promotional copy of this PDF to review. I don't play the base system, but the material presented within is suitably adaptable that without much work, I could adjust it to fit my system. This is a nice bestiary consisting of a brief forward, a quite varied collection of creatures, and then a series of appendices that detail the special abilities, genetic advantages, and genetic disadvantages reflected in the creature entries.

The book takes a fairly pseudo-scholarly and pseudo-scientific tone when discussing the entries, in fact the subsections on Physical, Social, Behavioral, and Inter-species Observation are fairly detailed and even somewhat practical despite the sometimes fanciful nature of the creatures discussed. Sometimes the entries fall back on the old "they wait around in woods/caves/swamps for children/adventures/other unfortunates to eat/spindle/mutilate..." tropes that probably really couldn't support an actual biological species, but these are monsters for your typical fantasy dungeon crawl environment, so that can largely be forgiven in the spirit of "adventurers need monsters to kill". The language sometimes seems like it is trying to sound more scholarly than it actually is when examined by someone with a background in science, psychology, or biology, but the tone is still good for a fantasy dungeon-crawl environment. Also, of note, is the clever use of some uncommon words, a few of whom I actually had to look up! Good job there!

The entries are a good mix between classic creatures such as the Basilisk and the Yeti, with some imaginative takes on them, and more unique and perhaps even original creatures. I am definitely going to use a couple of these in my games (particularly creatures like the Brag which very much fits the slightly more humorous tone some of my players' exploits entail).

There are a few little warts including some formatting issues, such as all entries but one in the Genetic Advantages list being of bold font, or the Bjornigar having a random box at the end of the Behavioral Observation section, or the smattering of red text for no clear purpose among the rest of the black text in many entries that prevents a 5-Star rating, but this is still a clever and interesting tome with lots of unique and appropriate line-art. I plan on making use of a number of these creatures and the supporting ecology/ behavioral data in my own games. All in all a nice little tome for less than ten dollars!

Compact & Worn Starship Deck Plan 6x6 Tiles

Just great! A nice, handy size for small fighter craft or small private cargo haulers. The art is charming and appropriately thematic. It certainly suits a "Firefly"-esque world (as opposed to the bright-n-shiny Star Trek or Star Wars)! I bought the print-on-demand version. They arrived quickly and are nice quality, basically they feel like playing cards. Highly recommended if low-tech sci-fi is your thing!

Like the undead set, I got this set in a big bundle and boy was I pleasantly surprised! These are even more bold, clear, and colorful than the undead set. Very striking figures! And like the undead set, lots of variety on each page. I really am thinking I need to run a game in an ancient Greek/ Roman theme so I can make full use of these! Great stuff!

I got these in a recent bundle and they are terrific! Very bold and colorful and individually distinguishable from one another and a very nice variety of critters! One of my favorite feature is that there are only a few of each type on a page as opposed to one long row of essentially identical figures- I can always print a page twice if I need more, but it's a pain to have a whole page of one figure when I only need a few! So bonus points for a great assortment from page to page!

Brutally hard to get started but a very good nod to the old "Gold Box" games of days gone by! I have finished one dungeon and have a good start on a second and while it's important to save often (as one hit can mean death for a character!) I am still very much enjoying it! Can't beat the price, either! I would rate it a star higher if the character generation section was a little handier and if party management was a bit less awkward, but it is worth every one of four stars! If I could give it 4.5 I would!

Creator Reply:
Thank you for the kind words, Jeffrey, and for taking the time to write a review . I very much appreciate the feedback. I have been writing and playing the game for five years now, and have probably become blind to its flaws. If you find more aspects that need improving, please write about them here. I am very interested to read any specific suggestions you may have for how to improve character creation and party management. In the next update, I will attempt to make the starting dungeon a bit easier to survive, without getting away from the old-school feel I am trying to deliver. \"Brutally hard\" is not what I was aiming for when I wrote this. :)

Into the Future: Derelict Starships
Publisher: Tabletop Adventures, LLC
by Jeffrey C G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/11/2015 16:11:48

I bought this on a lark when my gaming group seemed equally divided between a super-hero/ sci-fi gaming session and a dungeon crawl and I got the bright idea to combine the two, in this case, a derelict spaceship suddenly presenting a danger that must, therefore, be dealt with by the heroes! I literally had one day to prep and this particular game aid was a lifesaver! I was still cutting apart the cards for use (I printed them on colored cardstock) when my players began to arrive. This terrific product has just enough meat for each description area to suggest multiple plot ideas while simultaneously being consistent enough for a themed random dungeon crawl. I have gotten some other fantasy oriented products of this same nature, but I easily paid twice for that material that I did for this, yet this is everything I needed in one handy spot, from the concept art here and there to the raw text that could just be cut-and-pasted if needed, to the deck of cards for use on-the-fly! Great stuff! If you want to do a sci-fi/ horror starship scenario, this offers all sorts of possibilities. Pick it up today!

Pretty good set! Just what I needed and generic enough that they work fine with my homebrew system. My only complaint remains that they are a little pricey, but that's much less a factor in this set than some of the others due to the nice little geomorphs on each map card, so nowhere near enough to reduce my rating! I have now purchased most of these generic decks and use them in my games.
