Hostile Setting
Publisher: Zozer Games

Occassionally I come across a game line that when I read it, I think, "They read my mind. This is the game I wanted to play or create." The writing, rules, and background come together perfectly to fullfill the promised vision: a gritty, hard(ish) sci-fi game with a lot of excellent and usefuly setting details, equipment, timelines, and campaigns. The design and art are evocative, too.

While the setting posits CRTs and video phones ala 1980's sci-fi, it is merely an option. The HOSTILE setting still works using more modern sci-fi conventions. Or a mix of both--sturdy and bulky stuff on the frontiers, fancy and elegant back home.

The HOSTILE line has several excellent books, too, though I can only buy so many at once! With the sample for Orbital 2100 (I will soon be getting the full game) it is apparenty that Zozer games does it's homework and knows how to write hard sci-fi. This is an excellent product, and fills a gap between two of my all-time favorite settings: 2300AD and Transhuman Space.

The HOSTILE books could definitely use some bookmarks, though!

Low Tech Weapons
Publisher: Zozer Games

This book should be incorperated into Sword of Cepheus or any 2d6 that focuses on a low-tech period. The weapons listed a good cross-section, with weapon classes representing several types of weapons without attempting a cringy granularity. The rules for different armor types and weapon aspects are well-done with an eye towards realism.

The added rules are probably too much for a sci-fi campaign that lands on a low-tech world, but the equipment isn't.

Hostile Technical Manual

This is an interesting book that explains the alternate retrotech used in the HOSTILE setting. The illustrations are informative and the handwavium stuff (aritival gravity, hyperspace, etc) is written in such as to skip the techno-babble and makes it sound more like theories of concept papers.

Renaissance Deluxe
Publisher: Cakebread & Walton
by Aaron K. [Verified Purchaser]

This game covers a rare time period in RPGs, and does it with style. The style of the book screams Renaissance and the Alchemy and Witchcraft seem like they could have come from a period text. It has the perfect level of crunch for me being in the D100 line, which is mid-level. It comes with a wide array of careers and skills and is designed to cover a wide range of the Renaissance era. Which items or careers are applicable for a particular time frame is vague, so if a GM wants more historical accurcy, there's a little research invovled. But the rules are written well enough that such details (especially if you have magic!) probably aren't important.

This is probably my favorite incarnation of the D100 ruleset and they've also published Viking era and Revolutionary War material--and much more--using this system.

These cards are beautifully crafted and filled with inspiration, events, details, and more. Just flipping through them gives me ideas for plots and adventures. The cards are also sturdy and well made. I will be using these in my RPGs and writing every time. These are great.
