Treasure Chest Unlocked: Gems
by Chris G. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 01/16/2007 00:00:00

Treasure Chests Unlocked Gems

Treasure is always a part of the D&D game and at times it does seem like it just gets neglected to being numbers of gold pieces. Even other items are just given a value and soon they are sold and become gold pieces. A little extra detail ion the other types of treasure is always useful and ways of making them interesting and a little useful mechanically is good as well. That is what Treasure Chests Unlocked: Gems does. It presents forth many kinds of gems and helps the reader understand what they are and how they are significant. It will help make gems more then just what they are worth. Treasure Chests Unlocked: Gems is a PDF by Sword?s Edge Publishing. The twenty two page PDF has little art but does include pictures of many gemstones. It has a simple lay out that makes it seem like it is parchment and while it looks good will eat up some ink when printed. The book has no book marks. The book starts with some basic terms and then gets right into the different types of gemstones one can find. Each has a picture of the gemstone and that is very useful. There are some simple identification rules included in this as well. They give a DC for use of an intelligence check or the appraise skill. A character though can only use the appraise skill if they have some ranks in Craft Gemcutting. These are easy identification rules that use the rules and makes some lesser used skills a lot more useful. There are over forty gems tones described and shown in this way. There are two other uses the book gives for gems. Each requires a feat and certain skills to take advantage of. The first is harmonizing the gem. This attunes the gem to the person with the feat and as long as the gem is on the person they get a minor bonus to something. They can be like +2 to hide or +1 to all wisdom checks. Each gem has to be worn in a specific place. Then there is harnessing the gems. This is more powerful and the gem is destroyed in the process. One also has to be an arcane spell caster to be able to do this. Each gem affects a certain spell in a certain way like causing Protection from Law to be Extended. With the many types of gems in the book there are plenty of useful o0nes any character will be able to find. The book does a nice job of presenting what the different gem stones are and makes them more then just generic money. The new rules for using them to create different effects seems like it will work out pretty well. A worksheet with the different types of gems, pictures, and what they could do will really make this more useful and I would have liked to have seen something like that included. This is a good book for people that want more out of gems.

<br><br> <b>LIKED</b>: Takes gems and give thems more details and character<br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: no book marks. <br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Acceptable<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Satisfied<br>

Special Operations Marksman
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 11/11/2006 07:51:31

An RPG Resource Review:

This prestige class is the classic 'Sniper' - specially-trained and honed to a high degree. If you are building a SWAT team or hostage rescue team, you'll need a couple of these along with your Assaulters.

The talent trees available to this class are the Firearms Training and Sniper ones, with cross-training available in Long Range Reconnaissance. Firearms Training covers actual shooting skill, while the Sniper talent tree looks at some of the other things snipers are skilled at such as camouflage and concealment. However, the exceptional observation skills real-world snipers have to acquire are not catered for here.

Two sample snipers, both military, are provided. One is a recon specialist, the other a 'lightfighter' (light infantry specialist).

This is quite a good interpretation of a military sniper, although some of the ancillary skills - such as observation - are not included.

Mercenary Advanced Class
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 11/11/2006 07:43:39

An RPG Resource Review:

When someone says 'Mercenary' these days (especially in the same breath as D20 Modern) you think of former soldiers scampering around Africa or Afghanistan shoring up local warlords for a fat pay packet. Back in the mediaeval and renaissance eras, however, there were plenty of people who earned their keep by sword, pike and (in later years) musket, and this supplement is designed to enable you to play such as a Swiss mercenary or German Landsknecht... or at least to have the skills and abilities of a professional soldier whatever his employment.

Here we have a comprehensive advanced class giving all the details and skills required. Talents such as Scrounge - for many sellswords particularly in the mediaeval period were expected to find all their own supplies, they just got paid for fighting - and Push of Pike, which effectively models the use of the pike on a 17th century battlefield are available.

The GM will have to take a long, hard look at the range of abilities, though, to provide the degree of historical realism he requires for the game. There are feats and talents related to the use of firearms, for example, which will not be of use if he does not allow gunpowder.

For those who wish to work forwards from fantasy - or who prefer to allow the parallel use of magic and gunpowder - the rules are also presented in a format suitable for bolting this class on to a Dungeons & Dragons character.

This work is very clear and straightforward: it will be easy to incorporate into your game and to use when a player wishes to take this class. There is just one glaring mistake - in the opening paragraph it states that mercenaries were regarded as the 'dredges' of society, when I think they intended to say 'dregs - but if that's all I can quibble about there's no real fumbles here!

Overall, this shows a clear understanding of the capabilities of a mediaeval to 17th century mercenary/professional soldier and of both the D20 Modern and Dungeons & Dragons rulesets. It's also nicely illustrated in an understated way with pictures from the appropriate periods - although one picture does depict an atrocity in which a large number of defeated mercenaries were hung from a tree... so be warned if you intend to play one!

Gunpowder Plots
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 11/11/2006 07:37:33

An RPG Resource Review:

Produced as part of the Modern Mediaeval line, this is a straightforward run-down of early firearms for use within the D20 system, primarily D20 Modern although notes are provided for those who'd prefer to introduce them to a Dungeons & Dragons game instead. From matchlocks through wheellock and snaphaunce to flintlock, each fundamental mechanism is described and a few actual weapons presented with the necessary statistics.

There is also a range of feats to enhance your characters' abilities in using early firearms - quite different from firing modern ones, as any re-enactor will tell you - and notes on the accessories such as ammunition, replacement parts such as flints and the gunpowder itself. It's noted that while in historical times gunpowder was not a limiting factor, being produced in sufficient quantities for the needs of those wishing to use these weapons, a fantasy GM may wish to make it more expensive or limit its availability as a tool to control the spread of firearms within his game.

A major advantage of this work is the clear descriptions of both the weapons themselves and their mechanical use within the D20 system, however it lacks any real thoughts on how you might want to incorporate these weapons into a game (although you can get more ideas by reading other works in this series).

Overall, this is a compact and comprehensive collection of early firearms, enabling you to run a 17th century game (the Three Musketeers or the English Civil War, perhaps?) or to introduce them into a D20 Modern game as either archaic weapons or when your characters travel back in time to an era when these were the cutting edge of weapons technology.

Counter-Terrorism Assaulter
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 11/11/2006 07:31:31

An RPG Resource Review:

This chap, a prestige class, is the core of any SWAT or hostage-rescue team - the fellow who charges in and deals with the bad guys while protecting the innocent. Extremely fit and expert in small arms and explosives, you'd be happier if he's on your side than arrayed against you!

The talent trees available are Assault and Firearms Training, but the CT Assaulter is also able to select options from a Sniper talent tree - this is viewed as cross-training as a conventional hostage-rescue team or similar will be composed of Assaulters and Snipers, most operators specialising in one or the other area.

The Assault talent tree provides useful skills like CQD (Close Quarters Drill) which, in game terms, means that you are so used to fighting in a small space that you don't provoke attacks of opportunity when making a ranged attack. Other talents involve room clearance and setting effective breaching charges. In real life, these skills are acquired by extensive realistic and repetitive drills often conducted with live ammunition, honed by practise on a mock-up of the place you intend to assault if you have the luxury of advance warning (e.g. a siege which the team has been tasked to be ready to break, but in which negotiations are still going on).

Finally, two sample Assaulters are provided, one military and one a police SWAT team member.

This product shows a good understanding of the underlying skills necessary to be an Assaulter, and anyone wanting to run a Rainbow Six type game will certainly need a few of these around.

Combat Hero
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 11/11/2006 07:29:10

An RPG Resource Review:

The Combat Hero uses violence to solve problems, be it fists or firearms, as a street thug or as a government-sponsored soldier or law enforcer. The class is designed as a 'specialised class' which may be entered as early as 2nd level by a character who has already chosen their focus, or who wants to develop their combat abilities over and above other skills.

As well as a lot of bonus combat feats, the Combat Hero has access to the Defensive, Firearms Training, Leadership, Powerful and Tough talent trees. The Leadership one is quite interesting, choices from there allow the character to coordinate the rest of the team effectively, and to inspire them in times of danger.

The example characters provided are a combat medic and a big game hunter, hightlighting the versitility of the class to suit anyone who wants to be able to fight effectively irrespective of the career they wish to pursue. It's particularly useful if you are not intending to build a professional military character but still want to be able to hold your own in combat.

Capable Hero
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 11/11/2006 07:26:50

An RPG Resource Review:

The Capable Hero is the person with skills and experience that can be applied to a specific challenge. This class can be taken as early as 2nd level by those wishing to gain specific areas of expertise, and it can readily be used to build an NPC who is able to deliver a particular service for the party.

Talent trees provided are Craft, Knowledge and Social - reflecting the abilities of this class to develop expertise in making things, having specialist knowledge and being part of appropriate organisations in the areas of competence chosen. The knowledge talents are interesting in that they provide scope to utilse the knowledge in question, not just be a walking repository of the theory. You can also train others quickly to use a specific skill or knowledge that you possess, and focus in on a chosen skill to develop a specialist expertise in it.

Finally, sample characters are provided. There's an 'obtainer of rare artifacts' - basically a relic hunter, and a security consultant - who is quite capable of a spot of penetration testing as well as making somewhere secure.

This is a useful mechanism for developing a character with a specific area of expertise, particularly in a low-level game.

Talent Trees Assembled
by Rob M. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 07/26/2006 00:00:00

This 11 page PDF (14 with front & back cover & OGC declaration) provides 16 Talent trees derived from Sword?s Edge Publishing?s Roles and Classes line. They are derived from the three ?specialized classes?? products, the Capable Hero, the Combat Hero, and the Covert Hero, and the three military prestige classes? products, the Counter-Terrorism Assaulter, the Special Operations Marksman, and the Spec Ops Recce.

The more general talent trees from the specialized classes include the Craft, Knowledge, Skill, and Social talent trees from the Capable Hero specialized class, and from the Combat Hero specialized class we have the Combatant's Defensive, Combatant's Leadership, Combatant's Powerful, and Combatant's Tough talent trees. Finally, from the covert hero specialized class, we have the Covert Defensive, Covert Offensive, Covert Scout talent trees. From the military prestige classes we have the Assault, Firearms Training, Long Range Reconnaissance, and Sniper talent trees. These talent trees provide a total of 41 talents between.

In addition to the talent trees, there are guidelines on how to incorporate the talent trees for use with other classes, both basic and advanced is provided. This discussion also includes suggestions on how to swap the talents out for class features of prestige classes.

The PDF is laid out in a two columns with very little whitespace and ?army green? text used to indicate section heads, it uses a fancy camouflage & night-vision silhouette graphic for page numbers in the gutter space of each page edge, done as two-page layouts. Though this looks nice, it is likely to suck up a lot of ink. However the talent write-ups are also provided in an RTF file for your compilation and printing needs. There is a fair amount of art. Mostly photos of real life military and paramilitary units, along with a few character illustrations, most of which are decent. It is the same art used in the various roles and classes products from which Talent Trees assembled is derived. The cover and back cover are simple White text on black with a military style font. Overall it is readable and attractive but not terribly atmospheric.

Overall, this is a solid product providing a nice collection of talent trees which be used to augment existing talent trees or be used to build a custom class. Most of the talents are useful and worth taking, with none of them being terribly unbalanced. For anyone looking for more talents, especially military focused ones, this is a good purchase.

Covert Hero
by Rob M. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 07/25/2006 00:00:00

This 5 page PDF (8 with front & back cover & OGC declaration) details the Covert Hero Specialized Class for use in D20 Modern games. The specialized class is an intermediate step between basic and advanced classes, allowing a character to obtain more specialized abilities at a low level. A character can take levels in a specialized class starting at 2nd level.

The entry requirements for the Combat Hero specialized class include 4 ranks in the Hide or Move Silently skill , and one of the following feats, Alertness, Deceptive, Nimble, or Stealthy.

The Combat Hero is a 10 level stealth subterfuge skill focused class. It features a D6 hit die, and fair BAB bonuses (2/3rds level) (with 2 attacks available at 6th level and above), good Reflex saves, and poor Fortitude and Will saves. Members of the class also receive a DEF bonus equal to approximately half their level, starting at +2 due to combat focus, and reputation bonus equal to approximately 1/5th their level starting at 3rd level. The Covert Hero receives 6+1/2 Level action points, and 6+Int bonus skill points each level. It provides bonus feats at, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th level, and Talents at 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th level.

Covert Heroes have access to a few talent trees focused on defense, sneak attack, and detecting danger, these talent trees are the Defensive talent tree, the offensive talent tree, and the Scout talent tree. This choice of only three talent trees basically, allows the character to pursue two different talent trees. The Defensive talent tree allows the Covert Hero the Evasion and Uncanny Dodge feats, the Offensive talent tree provides the Opportunist (allowing an AoO on an opponent that has just been damaged), Sneak Attack, and Crippling Strike. Obviously, Sneak Attack is the killer talent here. The Scout talent tree provides Skill Mastery, Trap-finding, and Trap-sense talents. Skill Mastery seems most appealing, though the Trap-Finding talent is likely to prove useful. The Covert Hero has a large number of feats focused on combat, stealth and evasion available to him.

Two NPC write-ups of Covert Hero characters are provided as well. Mostly as stat-blocks with some brief history, one an ex-thief turned Bounty Hunter and the other a freelance commercial espionage freelancer. They both are interesting characters, and show the more interesting and competent low level character?s that can be made using the Covert Hero specialized class.

However an RTF version in black & white text is also provided should you wish to print out the class write-up. The art is sparse, with a picture of a rappelling black-ops trooper and daring infiltrator planting a bomb whilst hanging from a ceiling, both look good. The cover and back cover are simple White text on black with a military style font. Overall it is readable and attractive but not terribly atmospheric.

Overall, this is an ok product. The specialized class is an excellent concept, allowing for more competent, focused low-level characters. The covert hero talent trees seem a bit ho-hum and could have used one more for variety, and perhaps more stealth focused abilities. This is a decent class, just don?t be surprised to see sneak attacking skill masters every time. Still, with the specialized classes, you can have competent characters without the problem of overly inflated hit point totals brought on by artificially inflating their levels to provide characters with decent skill ranks.

Talent Trees Assembled
by Shane O. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 07/13/2006 00:00:00

Talent Trees Assembled is a collection of Modern d20 talent trees from Sword?s Edge Publishing. All of the talent trees here are reprinted from other SEP products, genericized and put into a single package. The zipped file is 3.15 megabytes in size. It contains a text readme file which catalogues everything in the zipped file, seven JPG images of pictures from the book, a rich text file of the product?s open game content, and the PDF file of the book itself. The PDF has no table of contents or bookmarks. It?s fourteen pages long, with one page each for the front and back covers, a page to index all of the talents in the book, a page for the OGL, (rather oddly) a blank page between the OGL and back cover.

The artwork in this product is a mixture of drawings and photographs of actual soldiers. All are in full-color, save for one picture of a ninja-like figure rappelling down a wall. There are color borders on alternating sides of each page.

The book starts off with roughly a page describing who should have access to these talents. Because these talents are presented alone, and not expressly relegated to any particular classes, guidelines are given about what types of classes should have access to them, and how often.

The product then launches into sixty-three talents in fifteen trees. While many of the individual talents are quite innovative, there are several reprints in here from the Modern d20 Core Book. For example, the Combatant?s Powerful Talent Tree consists of the Extreme Effort, Ignore Hardness, and Melee Smash talents, all from the Core Rulebook. While these reprints are the minority of the product?s talents, they?re still disheartening.

All in all, this is a book that, while good, could have been more than it was. Having talent trees that consisted solely of reorganized talents from the Modern d20 Core Rulebook seems somewhat wasted, particularly compared to the other new talent trees that were presented here. The blank page near the end is simply an oddity. While Talent Trees Assembled is a fair product, but could have been itself assembled better. <br><br> <b>LIKED</b>: Many of the talents here were new, presenting a variety of new options for Modern d20 characters.<br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: A number of the talents were reprints from the Modern d20 Core Rulebook, simply reorganized into different trees. Also, it was odd how one page near the end was completely blank.<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Very Good<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Satisfied<br>

Khorforjan Gambit
by Jim C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/02/2006 00:00:00

This adventure is quite different from the previous two Albenistan episodes, but in many ways the same quality of intense attention to local detail works well in this structure also. "Raid on Ashkashem" is just what the title implies, and there's nothing wrong with that, but this is a more complex urban, event-based adventure that requires interaction with many NPCs, good, bad and wavering.

The adventure works around a detailed, carefully balanced timeline of events that includes some successes and setbacks for the terrorists and the international forces alike (particularly some action by the Bravo Section NPCs, who I understand were actually the playtest characters), but ultimately will end in disaster unless the PCs can make a difference to the outcome.

The adventure assumes the same PC group of special forces head-kickers carried through from the previous episodes and the set encounters are combat-based, but it also rewards a quieter style of undercover work, rewarding a group who can make allies, talk to the locals and figure out the intricacies of a complex conspiracy. edit: Just a word about the plot hooks presented for alternate entries to the scenario, which range from brilliant (making the PCs a group of hapless Albenistani Intelligence agents) to poorly thought out (changing the Device to an artwork being smuggled out, which is hardly consistent with the shooting war with the UN peacekeepers that's integral to the timeline).

The city of Khorforjan is a well-detailed struggling post-Soviet centre, with definite poverty, criminality and dangers, but also signs of hope and friendship that the players may find worth defending. There's not a clear division here into sullen locals and gallant Western allies, but opportunities to find either help or obstruction on both sides. The NPCs have well-developed motivations and areas of skill that actually prove vital to the plot (with the possible exception of Kamilov, whose stats I don't think reflect the part that he plays in the timeline).

In concrete terms, the ZIP provides a full-graphic and graphic-free version (the latter goes beyond what would normally be described as "print-friendly"), both bookmarked, plus a RTF file containing the Open Game Content for the product. Editing is decent but has let through some odd word choices. There are a number of decent maps, but their key numbers are not carried through to the text, which itself is laid out in an order that's not easy to grasp on first reading, in places. In particular the locality descriptions (Chapter 2) refer constantly to events in the timeline (Chapter 3) and would have been easier to follow if presented in the opposite order.<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Very Good<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Very Satisfied<br><BR>[THIS REVIEW WAS EDITED]<BR>

Combat Hero
by Rob M. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 07/01/2006 00:00:00

This 5 page PDF (8 with front & back cover & OGC declaration) details the Combat Hero Specialized Class for use in D20 Modern games. The specialized class is an intermediate step between basic and advanced classes, allowing a character to obtain more specialized abilities at a low level. A character can take levels in a specialized class starting at 2nd level.

The entry requirements for the Combat Hero specialized class include a base attack bonus of +1, and one of the following feats, brawl, combat martial arts, defensive martial arts, or Personal Firearms Proficiency.

The Combat Hero is a 10 level combat focused class. It features a D10 hit die, and Good BAB bonuses (+1/level) (with 2 attacks available at 6th level and above), good Fortitude saves, and poor Reflex and Will saves. Members of the class also receive a DEF bonus equal to approximately half their level, starting at +2 due to combat focus, and reputation bonus equal to approximately 1/3rd their level starting at 3rd level. The Combat Hero receives 6+1/2 Level action points, and 4+Int bonus skill points each level. It provides bonus feats at 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th level, and Talents at 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th level.

Combat Heroes have access to several talent trees, The Defensive talent tree, The Firearms talent tree, the Leadership talent tree, the Powerful talent tree, and the Tough talent tree. This gives the player of the Combat Hero several options in how they wish to focus his abilities. The firearms talent tree allows the character to achieve a high level of ability with a specific firearm, the Leadership talent tree allows him to improve the effectiveness of one or two allies under his command, if his charisma modifier is high enough. The Powerful talent tree can let him make more damage melee attacks, while the tough talent tree can make him more resistant to damage. The Defensive talent tree abilities seem kind of weak compared to the other ones, particular Defensive Roll, due to the limitation of only when he takes damage that would reduce him to 0 points, or requires a Massive Damage Save, if he is eligible to use it, then he still must spend an action point and make a Reflex save versus a DC equal to the damage dealt, to reduce the damage by half. These extra limitations make it a bit of a wasted talent slot, compared to the other abilities.

Two NPC write-ups of Combat Hero characters are provided as well. Mostly as stat-blocks with some brief history, one an army combat medic and the other a big game hunter. They show the more interesting and competent low level character?s that can be made using the Combat Hero specialized class.

However an RTF version in black & white text is also provided should you wish to print out the class write-up. The art is sparse, with a picture of a female character with a rifle slung over her shoulder, whose proportions seem a bit off, and better looking illustration of Desert trooper. The cover and back cover are simple White text on black with a military style font. Overall it is readable and attractive and elicits the mood of the class.

Overall, this is a good product. The specialized class is an excellent concept, allowing for more competent, focused low-level character?s, while the combat hero provides some interesting options for creating combat focused characters. I recommend this to anyone who is looking to run a D20 modern campaign focusing on competent combat focused character?s without the problem of overly inflated hit point totals brought on by artificially inflating their levels to provide more skilled characters.

Counter-Terrorism Assaulter
by Rob M. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 06/30/2006 00:00:00

This 5 page PDF (8 with front & back cover & OGC declaration) details the Counter-Terrorism Assaulter Prestige Class for use in D20 Modern games. The image of a SWAT team or other elite unit dressed in black uniform, heavily armed and armored, his bullet proof vest festooned with ammo clip pouches and other equipment pouches, carrying a submachine gun or assault rifle is a popular one in the collective imagination, and brings to mind exciting & tense action scenes. This Prestige Class represents the highly trained operators that make-up units such as the US Delta Force, or FBI HRT (Hostage Rescue Team), UK SAS, German GSG-9, and many police SWAT units. Operators from these teams and units are tasked with making rapid entry into and securing a building or location occupied by hostile forces that are usually holding hostages. Character?s who take this Prestige Class will be on the forefront of such exciting action.

The entry requirements for the CT Assaulter PrC include a base attack bonus of +6, 6 ranks each in the Move Silently, Disable Device, and Spot skills, and 4 ranks in the Knowledge (Tactics) skill. The Advanced Firearms Proficiency, Personal Firearms Proficiency, and Precise Shot feats are required as well.

The CT Assaulter PrC is a 10 level combat focused prestige class, but it also has a heavy emphasis on skill use. Thus it a d8 for hit die, and Good BAB bonuses (+1/level), fair Reflex & Fortitude saves, and poor Will saves. Members of the class also receive a DEF bonus equal to approximately half their level, and reputation bonus equal to approximately 1/3rd their level. The CT Assaulter PrC receives 6+1/2 Level action points, and 5+Int bonus skill points each level. It provides bonus feats at 1st, 2nd, 5th, 8th, and 10th level, and Talents at 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th level. Additionally, at 3rd, 6th and 9th levels, members of this class receive ?Cross-Training? which allows them to select a talent from either of the CT Assaulter Talent Trees, or from the Sniper Talent Tree.

The Talent trees focus on CQB & assault training. The Assault Talent tree includes the CQD, Breaching, Instinctive Shooting, and Clear the Room Talents. These talents allow the character to avoid AoO while making ranged attacks, a bonus to initiative when making an entry, to automatically identify friendly & hostile targets, as well as automatically confirm criticals against, and allow the character to make auto-fire attacks against only targets of his choosing within an area, respectively. The Firearms Talent tree provides a variety of firearm based talents, including Personal Weapon Focus and Specialization, providing bonuses that stack with normal Weapon Focus and Specialization feats, as well as an Improved Critical talent that works as the feat, except only applies to weapons with which has Personal Weapon Specialization.

The character also has a number of feats available to him as bonus feats, including several weapon based feats. The Sniper talent tree provides the Camouflage, Careful Aim, Quick Aim, and Critical Strike talents. The camouflage talent allows him to double modifiers based on ability, cover and concealment modifiers with a full round of preparation, the Careful Aim talent allows him to double his ability modifiers by taking a full round of preparation, Quick Aim allows this to be done as a move-equivalent action. Critical strike provides automatic criticals, without requiring a confirmation roll.

Two NPC write-ups of members of the Prestige Class are provided as well. Mostly as stat-blocks with some brief history, one a military member, the other law-enforcement, and reflect the two focuses well.

However an RTF version in black & white text is also provided should you wish to print out the class writeup. The art is limited to a couple of ?stock? photos of Military Special forces type mounting a stairwell, stacking to make entry to a room, and a pair performing a tandem Australian rappel with pistols drawn. The cover and back cover are simple White text on black with a military style font. Overall it is readable and attractive and elicits the mood of the class.

Overall, this is an excellent product, providing D20 Modern players with a believable elite unit prestige class with some rather impressive skills, given the right preparation and circumstances, sure to lead some tense and exciting combats as the players make entry into hostage situations. I recommend it to anyone who might be interested in such a focused paramilitary style campaign.

Covert Hero

Do NOT buy this product. It was by far the worst purchase I have made on this site. Most of the talents were the same as/copies of fast hero talents. The only good thing was the few new talents. What a waste of time and money.<br><br> <b>LIKED</b>: Almost Nothing<br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: The "Covert Hero" was basically a slightly more powerful Fast Hero. Very little innovation in... well, anything!<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Poor<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Ripped Off<br>

Thanks for your kind words, Benjamin, and I'm glad you enjoyed Gunpowder Plots. I wish we could have included art of weapons drawn to scale, but I'm afraid the budget wouldn't allow for that. It would be an excellent addition and if we are in a position to do it in the future, we'd love to add images. Thanks again, Fraser at SEP.
