MasterBook Core PDF (Classic Reprint & 2E)
by Thomas B. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 01/24/2011 21:05:15

THE GOOD:

  • The MasterDeck is pretty cool.
  • The MasterDeck is included as a PDF, and available to order in print.
  • I dig the Advantages/Compensations system.
  • A comprehensive, step by step checklist (with worksheet) for making Special Effects.

THE BAD:

  • No character sheet.
  • An odd attribute scale.
  • No setting material, and no real examples of NPCs, monsters, etc.

An excellent set of Napoleonic minis. Easily usable for tabletop wargaming. Regret that a greater variety of Napoleonic nationalities doesn't exist.

Ancient Odysseys: Treasure Awaits! PDF
by erik f. t. t. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 10/21/2010 17:58:54

Well, first things first: Ancient Odysseys - Treasure Awaits! can be played with or without a GM (referred to as a Director in the rules). Having read thru (yet to play) the game rules, I would say that it probably works okay without a GM, but if a group were to play more then once or twice a GM would be needed to add depth to the roleplaying experience.

Task resolution is resolved using a single d6 and adding and subtracting the appropriate modifiers.

The system is simple, as it should be for an introductory game. There are just three classes (Vocations): Warrior, Rogue and Wizard and four character races (gnome isn't one of them, so you can work that out on your own).

Character generation is simplified in that you roll randomly for one of 6 sets of predetermined ability stats based upon your class. So, random and not... kinda. Characters have 3 stats, ranging from a score of 1 to 5. Wizards will be higher ranked in Reasoning, Rogues will excel in Awareness, and Warriors will be the ones with the highest Fitness.

Choose four skills (Pursuits) for you character, roll for some armor, choose a weapon package, if a Wizard choose your spells and lastly pick your other gear (torch, rope, satchel or grimoire). They say you can be up and running in about 10 minutes... I suspect you can prepare a character in less.

Spells descriptions remind me a bit of OD&D. Short, simple and to the point.

So, overall the rules look workable. They are composed of three books: Basic Play is what is says it is, the game rules. The second book is The Dungeon. Here we find the introductory adventure, suitable for solo, group, or group with GM play. The third book, Further Adventures, give the GM information on running a game, some monster stats and a nice amount of simple but random tables too flesh out one's own dungeon designs.

The author states at the end of the book three that he was aiming for simplicity for beginners and nostalgia for veteran gamers. I definitely feel he found a decent introductory system for new players (but it would definitely work much better with an experienced GM at the helm, but then, so do all RPGs. Does it hit the nostalgia mark? Maybe if RPGs weren't so rooted in wargames... there is a lot of abstractness in the system... you are either front line or in the back of the marking order for example. The Conflict Action Map has the positions of closest, farthest, sneaking or behind. You won't be measuring squares or flanking opponents. You will get to kill things and take their stuff - success is based upon killing things and taking their stuff. Wait, I guess that does make it a RPG that hearkens back to the early days of role playing ;)

I'm going to give Ancient Odysseys a 4 beer steins out a 5. Really nice introductory RPG but long term re-playability may be lacking. This may or not be an issue, depending on your group. Some may want a deeper system, but AO does what it does very well.

Disposable Heroes Western Statix 2
by William G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/20/2010 18:51:55

Very good product.

All minis come in 4 formats: tri-fold, bi-fold, 2d, and army! The army collection is a single miniature copied to fill the page. Quite useful if you want a bunch of townsfolk or soliders.

Good product, everything it promises, and to a high standard of presentation and layout.

I would like to see even more western characters!

High Valor (Revised Edition)
by Thomas B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/20/2010 12:04:19

The Bad: A few poorly selected fonts, instances of "dwarves and elves who aren't dwarves and elves" and the usual (minor) issues of mechanics in which players do all the rolling. The Good: Very strong focus on epic storytelling, flavorful Magic and Faith mechanics, and a great deal of flexibility while still retaining the "game". Story Bones Plus PDF
by Alfredo S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/24/2010 04:29:16

A promising update of this classic ruleset, better than the original Story Bones (originally published by Hubris Games), and benefitting from Brett Bernstein's clear writing and a few interesting additions. The original full version (Story Engine) was one of the most interesting (and overlooked) narrative-type rules-light games ever published and I'd recommend waiting for the updated version by Precis Intermedia, which will add several new genre plug-ins to the previous version.

Disposable Heroes American Revolution Statix 1
by David O. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/18/2010 16:02:21

There is little out there like it, but I was disappointed that there were no backs to these figures. The art has "character" and the figures work well in a pinch, but they are lacking backs and this makes me use them less than I would if they were complete. I just didn't feel like I got the best deal for my money and so I splurged on buying metal figures from the era for my game.

The genreDiversion 3E Manual
by R. S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/12/2010 02:53:22

I have been reading different "universal" rules systems for the last month and trying to find one that would work best for me. I started roleplaying with D&D 1E basic/expert set and have played many of them through the years. I have been happy with GURPS for a long time able to adapt it to what I want. But it is a bit rules heavy for new people starting out. Even if you use the lite version.

I have played a bit of Savage Worlds as that was recommended to me, but it isn't flexible enough for me. I could hack it a bit to give it a bit more realism and other klugdes, but it would start to become unbalanced quickly in my opinion. Don't get me wrong if you are just looking for a fun system that is easy to pick up and play but not very realistic, SW is worth checking out.

I find genreDiversion 3E to be a really slick system! Reading the rules, I could quickly see how great it is. It doesn't have everything and the kitchen sink included in the rules, although there is a lot, it doesn't need to. It is very easy to build off of the rules and have them work. For instance, I like having an option for someone to start bleeding after a wound, or to use cards for initiative like Savage Worlds. No problem. If I want to make the setting more cinematic or realistic, again very easy to change.

It also has some great scalling rules for changing the power of a campaign or mixing them. You could use the scaling to simply figure out what damage a huge spacecraft's laser does to a truck, for instance.

There are a few fiddly bits that I don't really care for, but I can remove or modify them easily without unbalancing the system.

If you like the EABA system, you will probably like this one. They have a lot of simularities, but I think genreDiversion 3E is a bit better in the design.

Disposable Heroes Fantasy Statix 3: Undead
by Jeff G. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 02/14/2010 18:52:25

This set IS my undead army. It's perfect for building a cheap army of minions, skeletons, zombies, etc.

If you need a lot of something this is ideal. Easy to assemble, quick to use, and even easily numbered so your players can tell you, I attack zombie 3, 12, and 74.

I can't think of anything that I would add to this set. It gives you exactly what it promises and does it at an extremely reasonable price.

Disposable Heroes Fantasy Statix 6: Monsters
by Jeff G. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 02/14/2010 18:48:31

This set of paper minis is one that I like to call "Big Critters". It fills a need that the previous Fantasy sets leave behind, creatures bigger than those of medium size. Dragons, trolls, ogres, and more.

These paper minis sheets come with a variety of options. Trifold, two-fold for use with plastic bases, and tokens. Color or not. You also get many creatures on a page so that you can print an army of hydra or a single gelatinous cube.

The downside of this product is that for me the least desirable option is the 2-D token that sits flat on your battle map is the only one that accurately displays the size in two dimensions on the map. I want my minis (even paper ones) to stand up and be easily seen all around the table. If I use the trifold method you get pretty close to filling the four squares that a large creature should fill. If you use the two-fold method with the plastic bases (my preferred system) then you fill two squares at best.My suggested fix is to print a token of the monster and place it under the two-fold stand up mini. It's not a perfect solution, but it's functional and cheaper by far than your metal or plastic minis.

All in all, easily worth $5 for cheap minis. I use these all the time whenever I need a legion of baddies or to fill in for minions in my 4e D&D game.
