THE FLYING SERPENT,

or

STRANGE NEWS OUT OF ESSEX

being

A true Relation of of a Monstrous Serpent which hath divers times been seen at a Parish called Henham-on-the-Mount within four miles of Saffron Walden.

Showing the length, proportion, and bigness of the Serpent, the place where it commonly lurks and what means hath been used to kill it.

Also a discourse of other Serpents and particularly of a Cockatrice killed at Saffron Walden.

This is a facsimile of a pamphlet originally printed in England in 1669, describing the appearance of a winged serpent not far from the town of Saffron Walden, 45 miles north of London, and how the locals reacted to it. It's a wonderful, vivid, strange, and very real piece of historical ephemera.

The seventeenth century's attitude to fantastical and mythological creatures was very matter-of-fact. The pamphlet doesn't question the reality of flying serpents, there's no doubt that these beings are actual, they really exist, and they may appear in the next village. The language is wonderful, the typesetting beautiful, the paper aged and stained. 'The Flying Serpent' has the ache of history on every page.

Also included is a preface written by Robert Miller Christie in the late nineteenth century, in which he describes other appearances by mythic snake-like beings around the UK in the 1600s and before, wonders about the true nature of the flying serpent, and speculates on who may have written the pamphlet.

'The Flying Serpent' is a fantastic, fascinating document that makes an amazing RPG prop for a fantasy or modern horror game, an inspiration for a unique adventure, or simply background for a game-world. You and your players have never seen anything like it.

An excellent prop for a horror or urban fantasy RPG, this is a 12 page document on the appearance of a flying serpent. The pages are yellowed and creased with age, and the entire document looks very authentic. I'd love to see more ready-made props like [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
