How do you win a game that’s trying to kill you?

It’s April, 2003, and Callie Myles is adrift. A 29-year-old games store clerk living in the Appalachian hamlet of Jett Creek, Tennessee, she has nothing to show for a lifetime of rule-following but a mountain of student debt. Life would be unbearable if she didn’t have Winterwind.

A roleplaying game created by Callie’s older brother, LB, Winterwind is more than weekly entertainment. It’s a place where following the rules is the only way to win, where dice and conversation conjure stories out of thin air, where painted miniatures are truly larger than life. It’s the closest thing to magic Callie has ever known. When LB burns to death in a bizarre fire, all of that is destroyed.

Asked by her friends to keep the weekly game alive, Callie searches LB's files for clues about where their adventure was headed. Instead, she discovers a portal into the game itself, where she can live as her beloved character, the marksman Arabeth. In this imaginary world of great heroes and dastardly villains, Callie finds an escape from mourning—until she learns something inside the game killed LB, and one of her fellow players was in on it.

Haunted by grief and pursued by a vengeful magician whose power is like nothing this world has ever seen, Callie Myles must master her brother's game to avenge his death. She will become the greatest GM in history or, like her brother, she will be swallowed by fire.

Written by novelist and game designer W.M. Akers, whose debut Westside was named one of 2019’s best books by the New York Times, Critical Hit is a funny, fast-paced hybrid of mystery and adventure that captures the the cutthroat world of tabletop roleplaying games, where life and death depend on the whims of a plastic die.

This looks super neato. But, what is the actual game the video mentions coming with the novel? Does it allow one to, like, play something approximating the novel's setting or plot?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
