Our Man on Earth: The Swithen Book 1

Merlin: Sired by a demon but won to good by a strong mother… This is no made-up tale, but the REAL origin story of Merlin from the year 1215 AD, retold for readers of today.

"The Swithen series is an exciting new addition to modern Arthurian fiction. Too often, Arthurian characters become stick figures in modern retellings, but that is far from the case here. ...I only wished it was longer."  --Tyler Tichelaar, Author of "Children of Arthur"

The devil wants a man on earth to work his evil plans. He decides to bring this about by impregnating a human woman. That woman, Meylinde, finds her life turned into a nightmare as a demon picks off her family one by one, until only she is left. Soon the demon’s work is done—in a time when an illegitimate child incurs the punishment of death—and she is desperate to save her own life while thwarting the devil’s plans for her child. But the demon who attacked her didn't count on her strength as a woman—or the unique gifts of her incredible son... a child that will become Merlin, the greatest wizard of all time.

Based on the oldest known accounts of Merlin, the Lancelot-Grail and Prose Merlin romances from around 1215 and 1450, this is Merlin’s actual origin story, not some made-up tale, thoroughly reimagined to be compelling to today's readers. It is also the starting point of one of the grandest retellings of the Arthurian legends, which begins here, a generation before Arthur is born.

"The whole thing is different from the King Arthur fiction you know... this is a very personal story, and one of the cool things about it is you just get involved with the characters and then you realize THAT is MERLIN."   --RC, Amazon Review

A work of horror, fantasy and wonder, this novel follows one woman as the suffering she endures is transformed through her power into a gift of magic and amazement. With surprising elements of mother-son tenderness, and filled with wonder and wit, this book brings the bizarre and weird world of the 15th century, where magic was as real as the air we breathe, to life for the present day—and offers a fresh perspective on the characters and stories we thought we knew so well.

This is the first of a projected 25 novels in the series The Swithen, which retells the real, ancient tales of Merlin, King Arthur, Guinevere and the of Knights of the Round Table in exciting versions that make sense for readers of today, and give the story the majesty and grandeur it deserves. The rule of The Swithen is that nothing about the original legend can be changed, characters and scenes can only be enhanced and added, so as you read you will know that you are discovering the real ancient Arthurian legend, not some made-up BS.

Join the saga as it begins and discover the original epic fantasy—the one that has inspired Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and even Star Wars—and find out why this story has endured for a thousand years. It all begins here, with the strength of one indomitable woman, and the birth of one incredible child.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
