Story Summary

A shapeshifter hero battles ancient spirits, a covert government agency, and his own dark past in a race to solve a murder that could mean the end of the world.

~~~
"I can’t remember the last time I read a book that spoke to me, so eloquently, and so deeply, on so many levels. ... I’ll be rereading it in the future because it’s that sort of book. Richly layered and deeply resonant. An old friend, from the first time you read it."
—Charles de Lint, World Fantasy Award winner
"An extraordinary author whom every lover of quality speculative fiction should read."
Fantasy Book Critic
~~~

The Heroka walk among us. Unseen, unknown. Shapeshifters. Human in appearance but with power over their animal totems.

Gwyn Blaidd is a Heroka of the wolf totem. Once he led his people in a deadly war against the Tainchel, the shadowy agency that hunts his kind. Now he lives alone in his wilderness home, wolves his only companions.

But when an Ojibwe girl is brutally killed in Gwyn's old hometown, suspicion falls on his former lover. To save her, Gwyn must return, to battle not only the Tainchel, but even darker forces: ancient spirits fighting to enter our world…

And rule it.

~~~
Cree and Ojibwe legends mix with current day environmental conflict in this fast-paced urban fantasy that keeps you on the edge of your seat right up to its explosive conclusion.
Which file formats? Does this include pdf or is it only in proprietary formats like kindle?
Why is this version more expensive than the $0.99 copies available on other websites?
I'm only looking for pdf. Not something that requires a proprietary reader.
Ellen, the title is available in both epub (non-proprietary) and mobi (Kindle) formats. There are tons of free epub readers that let you read epubs on your computer, tablet, or phone. I don't offer PDFs for sale as they are the primary source used by ebook pirate sites.
BookBub is currently running a deal on this title from March 9-16, offering it for $0.99 via Amazon, B&N, Apple, Kobo, and Google Play, in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and India. The title will return to its normal retail price of $4.99 USD after March 16 on those sites.
Thank you for replying so quickly.
Unfortunately, those companies insists on selling only their proprietary version of ebooks which requires their proprietary reader hardware. The Apple Books website doesn't even load on a Windows computer! That's frustrating. I was looking forward to getting into the Heroka series. I would pay for a paperback if it was available.
Maybe some year I will be able spend the multiple weeks necessary to learn an unfamiliar new software like epub and try to make it run on a Windows computer, but that isn't possible for me now. Too much software these days is weirdly incompatible with Windows.
Ellen, I understand the frustration. A few suggestions that might help. First, epub is not a proprietary format. It's an industry-agreed standard that all book publishers (and indies) use that is readable by lots of free and easy-to-use software programs that lets you read ebooks on any computer (or phone). You don't need an actual e-reader device. Here's a good article that discusses ten of these apps: https://www.how2shout.com/tools/free-best-epub-readers-for-windows-10.html
The Wolf at the End of the World is available widely as a print edition, including from Amazon and B&N in the US, and Chapters/Indigo in Canada. Not sure where you're located, but I list print edition retailers on my website page for The Wolf here: http://www.smithwriter.com/my-book-catalog#novels
Hope this helps and thanks for the interest!
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.
For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.
For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
