The Gamebook is Reborn!

Enter into Maelorum, where an ancient evil has risen to remind the world that magic and monsters still exist. Choose one of three main characters to read the story, and play the game as. Explore old school dungeons with high res, hand drawn art that will take you back to your gaming roots. With multiple endings, and random events, you will never read the same story twice!

Rules and character sheet is included, along with a ten page item list in the back of the book. With ten years of R&D, this is an interactive adventure book unlike any other.

Customer Comments:

"I just got Maelorum a day or two ago and just about every second of my free time has been invested in it since. I'm not going to make any definite judgment yet, but this may be one of the best adventures I've seen in a gamebook yet."
-Seth Witwuiki

"first impressions leave me impressed. The paper quality, the production values, the colour illustrations, the sheer amount of text... It truly is a labour of love."
-Jonathan Green

"I received the book and wow, it's looking amazing! I hope I will find time to play it soon!"
- Martin O.

"Hi, got mine too. Impressed with the complex system (for a Gamebook) and different angles. Nicely done :) "

The writing is excellent, and the system is very immersive. Being a writer of gamebooks myself I always jump at the chance to try something new, and Maelorum is one of the better-written gamebooks I've seen in recent years.

Struggling to get past that wraith encounter though. Perhaps I'm missing something, but I used the easy stats, and the fight with that first wraith seems to me almost unwinnable. The DMG for an easy character (I played Edan Kain) is 3, and the wraith's defense it 2, which means that you are only scoring 1 hp for every successful hit. That means you need 12 successful hits to kill the wraith who has 12 hp. The wraith however only needs a maximum of 5 successful hits to down you. He scores at least 7 damage on you every round, unless he rolls a 1, which wears those 30 hp down pretty fast. Four hits and I was down.

I've played through it twice and have died both times at the wraith encounter. Perhaps I'll try a different character than Edan Kain.

This is a review of Maelorum, which I can't post in the review section because I didn't buy the book from DriveThruRPG, but rather directly from the author's website.

I'm an old hand with gamebooks. I cut my teeth on Fighting Fantasy, Lone Wolf, Way of the Tiger and Fabled Lands. Recently I've been excited about a new batch of gamebooks in a different style, such as Michael Ward's DestinyQuest, and Will Fincher's fascinating Maelorum.
This review will have minor spoilers, so be warned.

Narrative
Fincher's narrative is the center point of the book. It’s a compelling and enjoyable journey under the mountain, evoking very effectively what it would feel like to delve into the deeps. Occasional full-colour illustrations add to the ambience, and the writing is very personal. You definitely get a sense of inhabiting the characters.
In reading Maelorum I quickly discovered that this gamebook does not have nearly as many branching paths as a typical gamebook. In almost...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
