Girls Gone Roque is an excellent sourcebook for Alpha Blue rpg. If you liked Alpha Blue you will like it as well.

Basically you get more of everything, more tables, more character options, more sleaze and more NSFW artwork. Art is again of varying quality although it is still predominantly good.

In addition to all that it includes rather nice, and light like with the rest of the game, system for ship-to-ship combat.

In summation if you liked Alpha Blue and it's overtly sexual and sleazy humour you will like Girls Gone Rogue.

Girls Gone Rogue is the first major expansion to Alpha Blue, the sci-fi roleplaying game where your character's sex drive will get him further than his hyperdrive. GGR (as coined by another reviewer), adds some additional mechanics and player creation options, more random tables for everything, insights into roleplaying and Space Dungeon Mastering from the author of "How to Gamemaster Like a F'ing Boss", and 29 pages full of a main adventure ("Ilsa SS"), something of a follow up adventure, and then a bunch of others of varying length and detail. Throughout, this is an entertaining read that has layers of references, humor, advice, and thought provoking ideas glued together by twelve year-old testosterone.

Most importantly, if you were one of us teenage boys that got unreasonably turned on wondering what Sean Young in "Bladerunner" would look like naked, the answer is on p.26. Yes it was worth the wait.

There are game mechanics answers to questions like playing a robot as a PC or playing a half-breed human/alien, as well as the interesting "Weird Sexual Fantasies and Fetishes" optional rule. The ship to ship combat mechanics is refreshingly simple as well. And if you need to role up a one night stand, there are tables for all of that, too. One of the most interesting tables to me are the "Noir-ish Victims, Fall Guys, and Losers" because I didn't realize I needed that, but in retrospect, how could I not and the inclusion makes my storytelling that much better. Another is the Archetypes table: No, it's not a rules-heavy subspecialization of a character class, it's an explanation of a story telling mechanic that I feel gives me the scaffolding as a player or Space DM the ability to be that much better of a co-story teller. I encourage readers to look at each table and additionally ask themselves, "why did VS put this table in here? What is he really trying to tell me?" I feel like you could probably change mechanics or table values without really breaking the system -- I think that's encouraged -- but do take the time to dig into those meta-questions about what's already there and the subtext it creates.

I'm not going to describe the plots to the adventures, but in general, VS sets the stage for you, gives you enough to drive the plot along, and the general ending the adventure is pointed towards. Those are all great, but do plan on actually making up some stuff on the fly to glue things together based on what your PCs do. And if you don't have the glue, there are tables for that.

My one complaint about the entire Alpha Blue franchise overall (as much as I've gotten through, anyway), and I will mention it just this one time rather than harp on it over and over, is that it's written for straight males, or maybe lesbians. I'm all good with the pubescent over-sex drive, because you really have to embrace that esthetic to get the most out of the game, but I feel like there's the opportunity for tables like "Shopping for Purses and Male Meat" and "So you Want to be a Male Satisfier." Yes, other genders and sexualities can do the translation themselves and still enjoy the game, but, as a fan of the author, I have perhaps an unreasonable expectation that he can do better. Fortunately, it's rumored that the forthcoming "How to Play Alpha Blue with Your Girlfriend/Wife Like a F'ing Boss" should help us all avoid Insel-ation.

Rumored by me.

Girls Gone Rogue is the first supplement to Alpha Blue, a D6 based vintage sleazy sci-fi RPG by the inimitable Venger Satanis. You will require a copy of Alpha Blue to properly make use of this book as intended, although even if you don’t play Alpha Blue you may still find a lot of the charts and adventure seeds herein useful in your own sci-fi game of choice.

If you’re easily offended by sexuality, nudity, drug use, and other adult themes then this game is probably not for you. Venger knows his audience, and isn’t one to concern himself with pleasing the masses. The synopsis to the main adventure contained in this supplement is thus:

“Lisa SS is the name of a Slut Series Replicant that has gone haywire, screwing and blasting her way through the galaxy. Normally, that kind of thing wouldn’t be priority one on the Federation wave wire. However, Ilsa SS has taken out a number of key Federation assets and politicos. The Federation is hiring an expendable team of spacer rejects to retire her a** with extreme prejudice.”

Sound like fun? If so, read on!

I ran the principle Ilsa of the SS adventure back when it was in play testing well before this book was released. My party had a blast with it then, and I even hombrewed a follow-up adventure of my own to continue the story afterwards. It’s typical Alpha Blue fare, full of sex and drugs, comical NPCs and situations, and plenty of throwback reference to the vintage sci-fi that Venger is such a fan of. The adventure as it stands now isn’t much different than the one I ran in play testing, though some extra elements and NPCs have been thrown in which flesh it out nicely and give plenty of options for the party to pursue depending on if/how they want to help the Federation resolve the Ilsa SS problem.

Before you even get to the adventure though, there is real Alpha Blue treasure contained in the first 40 pages of this book. If you’ve played or read any of the books Venger has released under Kort’thalis Publishing, then you will be aware of his love for random roll charts. These were the best selling point of Alpha Blue for me, and Girls Gone Rogue adds a whole lot more to the mix! With so many random roll charts (all of which are entirely optional, so you can pick and choose which to use or even to use none at all) you really shouldn’t have trouble generating interesting and hilarious PCs, NPCs, Scenarios, and Environments for a long time to come! My favourite in this book is titled What The Fuck Did I Do Last Night?!?

There is also a cool section on Spaghetti Western Tropes that shows how you can convert your sleazy sci-fi game into a sleazy sci-fi western! This section also has roll charts that you can use and offers some inspiration as to what kind of adventures you might run in such a setting. It’s a small bit, but could add so much to your game if you wanted to go that route.

Then there’s my favourite part of this whole book: the Ship-to-Ship Combat System and Chart. It offers a cool and easy way to manage ship combat without having to track dozens of variables and monitor shield strength, weapon power, and hull points. As everything in these books, the system is entirely optional, but if you want to keep your game fast paced and exciting I think this is an excellent tool to implement into your Alpha Blue game immediately! In fact, like all of the charts in these books, you could pretty easily implement them into your other favourite sci-fi game as well if you like!

After the primary adventure, Ilsa of the SS, there are 10 more adventure seeds in this book, one of which is pretty fully fleshed out while the others give you just enough info to flesh out and build upon as you play in whatever way best suits your own group. There’s something I find refreshing about Venger’s style of adventure writing, and I think it’s how open-ended he keeps everything. He offers multiple suggestions as to how the party COULD become involved in the adventure, but nothing is force-fed. In fact, there are often suggestions as to what could happen if the players just say “Forget this, we’re not getting involved!”

Bottom line: I’m really impressed with how much valuable information Venger has packed into this 69 page supplement. The last 10 or 11 pages are full of ship maps and note pages that you can use to make your own Alpha Blue campaign something really special to your players. As I said in the beginning, Venger knows his audience. If you, like me, are a member of that audience, then you really can’t go wrong with picking up this book!

An Endzeitgeist.com review

This massive expansion-book for the sleazy space opera RPG Alpha Blue clocks in at 80 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page inside of front cover, 2 pages of editorial, 2 pages of ToC, 1 page inside of back cover, 1 page back cover, leaving us with 72 pages of content, so let's take a look!

All right, before we dive in: This is designated as Mature Content. It is the expansion book for a rules-light RPG that reproduces the aesthetics of scifi-porn-satires, so if you have a problem with sexuality, dick/vagina/boob-jokes and gender stereotyping for men and women, this may not be for you. While the males and females I played this with considered it hilarious, that must not necessarily hold true for you or your game. Artwork-wise, this book's artwork contains full-frontal drawn nudity and also features artworks of orgies that involve tentacle-aliens that look like gricks - the artwork is significantly more explicit than in Alpha Blue - where Alpha Blue was softcore, this one's artwork is hardcore.

And the artwork and content includes...vagina sandwhales. That says it all right there. This book is not for people who take themselves too seriously and can't take a dirty joke. If your impulse to such behavior is "unbecoming" or "puerile", this may not be for you.

All right, this out of the way, we begin with the author's signature array of extensive tables to provide dressing and random features, beginning with general scifi-aesthetics, a total of 30 unique alien features...and then things become interesting: Relative experience in space with 6 entries actually has significant influence regarding mechanics, netting you unique benefits. 8 alternative careers are also included. Finally, there would be Zedi - yep, Jedi-parody. Their abilities are usually rolled with 2d6, but when a character only very rarely uses his powers, it's 4d6, which is a nice idea. However, the respective powers are severely lacking in precision. Stopping an energy weapon in mid air is cool...but can it affect ship weapons? What range does it have? What does "Boosts a zedi's luck in games of chance." actually do? No idea. This is basically not functional and requires copious amounts of GM-fiat. And no, just because it's supposed to be rules-light, this does not get a pass for this one. Not good. Also problematic: The dark templar's death curse, while a cool idea, nets a target only a 2 in 6 chance of survival, which pretty much begs to be abused, but can at least not be spammed or the like.

A total of 30 archetypes (basically tropes sans mechanical repercussions) can help customize the character and the book contains a hilarious "And now for something completely different Monty Python"-event table. A table to determine what happens to PCs between games is neat and we also get a table for sexual vibes and a massive 5 column, 20 row weird sexual fantasies and fetish creator: You could end up with " Pineapple, pom-poms, ferns, mazes and severed toes" - yeah, not kidding about weirdness. Reactions of females to unsolicited advances, random clothing articles, hair and body, physical beauty, profession and names, 100 peculiarities of women (and 20 of men - hey, we're simple critters!) an random "O"-face-generator, a random table to determine orgasms, Stockholm Syndrome, random pawn shop items, and a hangover "What the fuck did I do last night?" table add a lot of weirdness to the game.

Sample Alpha Blue NPCs, Noir-ish sample characters, small talk topics, using Spaghetti Western Tropes in space (cough Firefly /cough), blaster duel rules, technology glitches, planet generators, ship to ship combat (that actually runs smooth and is pretty deadly) and additional fuel sources are included.

Okay, but this also contains adventures - or rather, adventure-set-ups. Basically, the pdf walks you through the process pretty well, but do not expect read-aloud texts galore, cartography of the locations and the like - however, even more of the copious tables are included in the book's modules.

Note: The following takes a look at the module section, so potential players should jump to the conclusion to avoid SPOILERS.

...

..

.

All right, still here?

The first module is basically a parody of a combination of Blade Runner and a twist on the exploitation classic; hence the module is all about Ilsa of the SS - basically a Slut Series sex-replicant that has lived too long and developed sentience. By means of contracting a bio-engineered STD, the PCs are press-ganged into hunting her down, but not all is as it seems. And yes, the hunt for her will lead the PCs to a planet that contains aforementioned vagina-whale sandworms as well as washed up legend Bubba Fatt. Oh, and killer sex-bot moves.

The second module treats the PCs after the Ilsa-incident as basically loose ends and involves the PCs in a political set-up between a power-struggle in another planet's monarchy/an escort mission with a princess in disguise. Can you picture how that'll go. Yep. Similarly, winning the lottery may see a whole galaxy snuffed out. There is also the plot of amazonian slavers, a sex-enhancing drug...and then there would be the titanic colony ship, captained by Black Helmet, aka Moranis...or the space-sheikh's harem...or the escape from the penal planet destructo...and have I mentioned the outline that is an homage of the genius Life of Brian? Saving a space-cheerleader from a slaver is also a pretty nice one.

The book concludes with excellent maps - the Barstar D and no less than three ships (one with strange tentacle-studded organic components, all in full-color and spanning two maps, provided testament of cartographer Glynn Seal's talent.

Conclusion:

Editing and formatting are very good on a formal level. On a rules-level, the book oscillates between great and some instances where it is lacking. Layout adheres to a printer-friendly 2-column b/w-standard and the b/w-artworks throughout are glorious. The pdf contains the glyph-font that you can translate to lewd sentences. The cartography is stellar and the pdf is fully bookmarked. I do not have the print version, so I can't comment on that aspect.

One of the issues I had with Alpha Blue as a base book was that it didn't go the whole way - to use an appropriate terminology, it got stuck in the heavy-petting phase. This one goes all out - so kudos for that! For the most part, this book contains an excellent array of awesomeness regarding the supplemental material for Alpha Blue, but there are some serious hiccups in here as well: The non-functional Zedi are disappointing and regarding the "modules"...I don't know. Less would have been more here. Don't get me wrong, the two long "modules" here are pretty cool, fun and evocative.

The other encounters/module-set-ups, in contrast, feel like afterthoughts and usually have this one cool idea, but don't do too much with it. It may be just me, but I really would have preferred a more precise take on the big modules, more fodder, more details, maps or the like over these sketches. Why am I using quotation marks for "modules" here? Well...apart from the longer two, the others are basically what you'd read in an adventure-synopsis. They need you to fill in all the details and while I don't mind too much, I still feel that their respective cool concepts could have been boiled down to a paragraph and replaced with more detailed material for the big ones - which are similarly a bit sketchy. This, as a whole, is pretty weird, for Venger As'Nas Satanis has shown that he can write more precise modules. On the plus-side, what is here tends to put a smile on your face and inspire, even if it does require some work on the Space DM's side.

In the end, this is a good expansion, but one that falls a bit short of what it could have been. My final verdict will clock in at 4 stars.

Endzeitgeist out.

Girls Gone Rogue (GGR hereafter) is an 80-page supplement for Alpha Blue. The book expands on the options and tables found in Alpha Blue. There are additional character options and lots of tables but really sets this book apart, and makes it a must have for AB fans, are the adventures. If you are a fan of Venger's style of mixing and matching various pop cultural references then these adventures are a real treat. In particular, the mixing of Galaxina and Ilsa She Devil of the S.S. is quite fun really. Venger obviously grew up on a steady late night Cinemax. Actually, that explains a lot of GGR to be honest. This one is a bit harder to judge in terms of a game book. I will say that if you enjoy Alpha Blue, then this is a good buy and will be very useful. If you don't like Alpha Blue then GGR will be more of the same really. Though there are a some that would enjoy the adventure seeds for use with other games.

So. Who should buy these books? Well it's pretty simple. If you have Alpha Blue or like playing it then these are "must buys". If you play some other Sci-Fi game and want to add a little "Sleaze" to your "Scum and Villainy" then these are must buys only behind Alpha Blue itself. If you like lots of pop-culture references, especially ones that are more R or even NC rated, then this is also for you. But if that is the case you already know this.

Who should avoid this? Well normally when reviewing a product I stay away from these sorts of discussions. But in this case, I will say those who are easily offended should not bother. More to the point with me though is don't go into these books expecting to find a lot of material you can use for other, non-sci-fi, games. Can I use it with say a Modern game? Sure, but there are a lot of conversions I'd have to do. Not game mechanics, but style.

Both books are a lot of fun and I am certain I can still find a lot to use here even in my PG and PG-13 rated games.

I'll say one thing for Venger Satanis, he's consistent! I reviewed Alpha Blue a few weeks ago, and had been wondering what sort of follow-up VS had in mind. Had I known that I would find the greatest sand-faring creature ever to bless a source-book in the Vagina Whale Sand Worm, I would have gravitated to this earlier. Never before have (3?) things come together in so eloquent a manner. Thank goodness there's an illustration so I don't have to leave it all up to my imagination, which could never handle processing a creature so distinct and unusual. Kudoz to the artist.

Where to begin? Girls Gone Rogue is not too distinct from Alpha Blue, using the same approach of campy, sci-fi trope humor to accentuate the sleazy, low-rent feel of the space-station turned whore-house. VS has once again managed to take some of the best TV and Movie references of the 70's and 80's and drop them into a sea of a thousand tables. Oh...don't you worry. Uncle Venger made sure that this source-book was loaded with tables for everything from 'how does she look during orgasm?" (BTW...nice reference to Office Space there), to my favorite, the Female Attributes Table. Now, I'm no feminist, but I find it curious that the male attribute table has 20 entries, and the female is a d100 roll! So funny...entries like Pregnant, Abusive, and Never Wants Sex are just a few winners that top this chart!

That's nothing compared to the Turn-on table...which curiously crosses every line of good taste (of which I have none, so fret not) except does not list Poop! Seriously, are there places even Venger will not tread? Was Poop the line he would not cross? Hmmmm....

Let's talk about art. Some of it was rehashed from Alpha Blue, but that's cool, since some folks might buy either book and not the other (though IMHO, you should grab both, otherwise it just seems incomplete). I decided that the image of the Sean Young-ish Replicant-ish chick beaver shot is my favorite new illustration from the lot, followed closely by the orgy scene with the Grell with penises where the hook/claws would normally be (that is some seriously crazy shit man...)

Venger has done a nice job rounding out the AB universe with some ship-to-ship combat rules, planetary type tables, and going a bit deeper on the Zedi (who are you kidding with that? We all know you're under investigation from Lucas' legal team). Possibly the nicest addition are the adventure scenarios towards the end. If you weren't sure how to use these books, go right to those and pick a good time to be had by all, then roll up some PC's and start drinking...ehem..I mean playing. There are references to some great, classic stuff...you won't find them all on the first pass. It took two readings for me to find the transformers reference...nice one there.

Now, VS sent me a review copy, but he told me I could say anything I want about these books. I'm just gonna go with the following statement:

If you are easily offended, this stuff isn't for you. It's not for kids, old ladies, SJW's, or small woodland creatures. If you are an irreverent, somewhat twisted character of a moral standing that is nearer to sitting, or laying down, then this might be a fun way for you and your buddies to pass an evening. It's gonna derail. Let it. That's all part of the fun! Hopefully my enjoyment of this book and its mate won't make you think less of me.

Turns the perv factor up to "11". If Alpha Blue wasn't smutty enough to satisfy, Girls Gone Rogue is here to save the day, taking the "R" rating of Alpha Blue straight to "XXX".

Having said that, there is more than just porn here. Crammed full of tables, tables, and more tables. NPC's, ships, maps, rules, a full adventure, sever mini adventures or seeds. There is a lot of content along with the titillation.

If you own Alpha Blue or are thinking of getting it, Girls Gone Rogue is a must-buy.

Kort'thalis Publishing sent me a complimentary copy of Girls Gone Rogue last night. I haven't spoken of the book since the Kickstarter ended. So colour me curious about what the actual erotic space opera pdf is like? Well according to the Kickstarter blurb;"Girls Gone Rogue will be somewhere around 50 pages and will contain more tables for character, setting, and story creation to help Space Dungeon Masters manage their universe. [I just finished writing a d100 table called Peculiarities of Female NPCs based upon my love of Seinfeld and gratuitous dating experiences]" Yes that table is in there but the actual pdf clocks in at around eighty freaking pages of O5R Alpha Blue gaming material. Seriously this book is packed with wall to wall space opera goodness for DM's, players and they're PC's. I have a few tables in this book but that won't affect my opinion one way or the other. This isn't just an adventure instead its an Alpha Blue sourcebook with an adventure wrapped in between its folds. Girls Gone Rogue presents random chart after random chart that can add not only that extra ounce of weirdness to a PC.But some really weird bits of erotic oddness and adult themed characteristics to a character sheet especially from the FETISHES The Sexual Fantasy and Fetish table. Don't let that fool you at all. This isn't F.A.T.A.L. and in fact it isn't even trying to be. The book is up to the quality of Alpha Blue and surpasses it in places. There is a Jedi Knight PC parody class called the Zedi knights and all that goes with it. Brand new PC options and arch types. Some damn fine sci fi artwork scattered throughout. Tons of tables for what your adventurers did between adventures.Even more tables of finds, weapons, sexual hang ups, psychological additions, NPC and PC options. Even more NPC's, tons of other folks to meet, etc. There's a section on using Alpha Blue to emulate a sci-fi spaghetti western. I can see an Alpha Blue/Boot Hill mash up in my future at some point. There are planetary generation tables for the game. And even a complete ship to ship combat system is included and it looks damn workable from what I've seen and read. So is there an actual adventure in all of this hot sweaty space opera mess? As a matter of fact there is and then some. The Girl Gone Rogue is actually very nasty piece of work called Ilsa SS."Ilsa SS is the name of a slut series replicant that has gone haywire, screwing and blasting her way through the galaxy. Normally, that kind of thing wouldn't be a Priority One on the Federation wave wire. However, Ilsa SS has taken out a number of key Federation assets and politicos. The Federation is hiring an expendable team of spacer rejects to retire her ass with extreme prejudice." The PC's are roped into tracking and 'retiring' the android but not all is as it seems. There are even more random tables to make this adventure slightly different each and every time it's played. The infamous Bobba Fat is right in the center of the action and there's room for expansion. Scattered throughout the adventure are references to each and every sci fi franchise and movie that Venger could parody and get a hold of from popculture. I was laughing hard identifying all of them. Throughout the book there is a ton of material to scavenge for other games. This isn't simply one adventure but there is an expansion of at least five different pieces of campaign setting stuff for any old school sci fi space opera or fantasy. There are literally months of campaign material here with lots of penis, ovipositors and tentacle action happening in the background. The artwork is both erotic, jarring, full on and very well done for the book. The artists did a bang up job on Girls Gone Rogue. There's at least three or four send ups of Jason of Star Command, Dune, Star Trek, Space Balls, Star Wars, Outland, and much more but all of this is fueled down and through the raunchy and riotous Alpha Blue lens. The PC's are squeezed right into the background of all the action, twisted around, and spit out into a campaign that they're going to be movers, shakers, or victims of when all is said and done. Do I think that Girls Gone Rogue is worth the price of admission yes in a word I do. Eric Fabiaschi Swords and Stitchery Want more?
