This preview is great, I had heard an interview on Sharkbone podcast about this game and since I have two girls in the age range I thought it would be good to check it out. the preivew gave me just enough detail to know I wanted more and that it will suit my girls. I have now bought the full RPG and am making my way through it now.

Realms of Cthulhu

Before reading this rule book I had no idea who H.P Lovecraft was or what was a Cthulhu, however as I was halfway through reading it, I was inspired to go out and learn about the mythos in general. Why do I mention this in a review about a rule book? It’s because this book captures the theme of Cthulhu perfectly. The book is well laid out and easy to follow. The art work really brings to life what the Cthulhu mythos is about.

This book does a great job of merging the world of Cthulhu with the Savage Worlds rule set, a rule set that is known for its fast pace and furious fun something that would not normally be associated with the world of Cthulhu. This book supplies a whole range of new archetypes for players to use when developing there investigators and a load of new edges and hindrances that are perfectly suited for a Cthulhu themed game.

The book also gives players and the GM a choice when playing the game on how gritty and dark they want their setting to be, it gives some good ideas on how best to achieve it within your own game, whether you want to ride the slipper slide into madness with no hope of escape or give each player the thought they have the chance to come away as the victor this book has it all. For any Call of Cthulhu players out there, Realms of Cthulhu has a really nice conversion chart at the back of the book on how to convert your character across and from what I have seen and heard it works very well.

Along with some very nice story hooks and a well thought out quest generator this is simply a beautiful book to read, and is a must for anyone who calls themselves a Cthulhu fan or wants to see what the whole fuss is about. Do yourself a favour and pick this one up.

DRAGONSHIRE: Deluxe Edition
Editeur: Fat Dragon Games

This is some of the most elegant and easy to build scenery there is available. If you love to game and you want your table top to come to life you cannot go past any of the Fat Dragon Games range, especially if you don’t have the time to commit to custom building you own scenery. All you need to do is simply print it out on some nice thick card stock, and then with a little time and some glue you can have a great looking table top ready to go for your next gaming session.

Best of all, due to the scale of the models, not only is it great for all of your RPG’s needs but it works great for most war games as well. So if you have been thinking about adding a little spice to your table top but don’t have the time to build from scratch, I suggest looking at some of Fat Dragon Games range it is well worth the money and your players will be amazed as the can see the world you’ve created right there on the table top in front of them.

Blood of the Dead: A Supernatural Time Travel Zombie Thriller (Undead World Trilogy, Book One)

Blood of the Dead: by A.P Fuchs Being a fan of the zombie genre, I bought this book on a whim, just as a filler book to read between books that I was going to read. This however turned out to be one of the best impulse buys I have made. The book has a group of likeable characters that grow and develop through the book. As things get tough for them you find yourself mentally cheering them on, and hoping for their survival. As the characters Joe, Billie and Des are forced to leave The Haven in search of a ‘safer place’ A.P Fuchs does a great job of building the sense of impending doom that surrounds our group of heroes as they make their way to the city. Once there the trio soon meets a man named August who had lost everything and is looking for someone to connect with. Even with the addition of August, things steadily get worse for the group and send them on a crash course to hell and back again as they try and find a place to live if relative safety. This book is well written and has everything you want from a zombie thriller, plenty of zombies, plenty of action and a few laughs on the way. Once you have finished Blood of the Dead you will want to pick up the second book in the trilogy and sink your teeth right into it. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

Verge 24

For a 14 page Fantasy Punk RPG that was written in 24 hour you couldn’t ask for much more. The first few pages give you a real sense for the world how it looks and feels. As I was reading the description of ‘The City’ where everyone lives, I had scene from Dark City and V for Vendetta flash through my mind which later on the Author recommends players watch for inspiration and it is clear that he has done the same.

From there the book describes how the day to day society is run and breaks down the social classes down in to groups explaining how they work together. This gives you as a GM or as a Play a solid but open idea of the setting and how you can build upon it.

The rules are simple roll a handful of D6’s equal to your stats + modifiers and look for successes. This enables both the player and the GM to shape the outcome of the challenge that was being faced. The author himself notes that he didn’t get to the magic section but to be honest with the rules the way that they are it is not hard to add in your own magic system.

Character creation is well laid out and easy to follow. There are a few examples given as well, not that they are really needed but it is always nice to see some included in any RPG. All in all it shouldn’t take more then 10 minutes to create a character and the hardest part of that will be picking a name for them.

Summing up, I highly recommend Verge 24. This is a well laid out, rules light RPG that could be brought to any table taught to the players, have them create a character and be ready to go in about half an hour. While it is missing a magic system it’s not the end of the worlds and the author does acknowledge this right at the front of the book. As it’s free you can’t really complain about the price either. Maybe with any luck in time the author will go back and complete a 2nd edition including a magic system but till then. Download it, Read It & Play it.
