Rain of Terror
by Scott S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/03/2015 14:31:03

Rain of Terror is a clever adventure that pulls the PCs into a treasure seeking adventure against a group of bloodthirsty pirates. Unbeknownst to them, the true "villain" is far worse and infinitely more interesting than pirates.

Creature stat blocks are repeated throughout the adventure module and although this inflates the page count a bit, it is a welcome feature. A good adventure in my mind, takes the space to repeat this kind of information to reduce constant and highly annoying page flips.

Several new creatures appear within Rain of Terror that are truly worth a look. Cleverly designed, these new creatures will add a lot to any GM's toolbox.

The artwork is reminiscent, to me at least, of the old school adventures that I grew up with and adds a nostalgic feel.

The generic stat blocks contained within this adventure are quite clever. Although some very minor mathematical conversions are needed, the overall conversion process is quite easy. I converted this adventure module to 1st edition AD&D rules without much trouble at all. I suspect that conversion to other systems would be just as easy (Pathfinder, etc.). I have heard some people complain about the stat blocks being difficult to figure out, but I feel this opinion is quite unjust and I would go so far as saying that even beginner GMs could convert it with ease.

All in all, this is an excellent adventure. It is reminiscent of the old TSR works on one hand, but at the same time adds a fresh and exciting theme. You really can't go wrong with this one.

A fantastic product written by a pair of veteran game authors and designers. A 'must have' adventure for those desiring to inject a little horror into their science fiction campaigns.

Lich Dungeon - Level One
by Edward P. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/31/2013 16:53:27

Lich Dungeon - Level 1 is one of the best RPG products I picked up this year. The level is expansive in the old school style, full of monsters, traps, hazards, puzzles, and treasures. And it's just the first level! That alone makes it worth buying. But what puts it over the top is the writing. Mentzer brings a quality of prose to this product you can't find anywhere else. He's imaginative, smart, informative, and downright funny. It's a fun read even if you never play it. But plan on playing it. Your players will thank you.

Curse of the Weaver Queen
by Thomas B. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 02/13/2013 05:51:39

WHAT WORKS: I like the generic guidelines for stats, making it even easier to convert to Your Favorite Game than normal, in most cases. The option to travel to the other temples can really extend the gameplay of the dungeon. The twist with the final “boss” is very tragic and cool, making it fit in right at home in a dark fantasy setting, which tends to be my preferred flavor of fantasy.

WHAT DOESN’T WORK: It’s a dungeon crawl…meaning there’s a few elements that just seem thematically out of place, at least to me, but that’s purely a taste thing. Pretty much every stat block is posted both as they appear in the adventure and after the first temple, which is odd because a) it is reposting the same material and b) it could have at least been at the end of the book, rather than the middle, which is an odd place to summarize things. Damage is the only thing that’s not “generic”, as damage values are assigned to most things, which may not work so well if used “straight” in your conversions.

CONCLUSION: I’m not the world’s biggest fan of dungeon crawls, but there are some cool elements in this adventure. My preferred use of it would probably be Savage Worlds or the AGE System as noted above, but I would totally have to rescale the damage as rolling 7d4 leaves waaaay too big of a chance of dice just absolutely exploding and taking people out fast.

Most people who know their game system can convert a lot of things fairly easily, but I know I get a little antsy about tackling, say, D&D4th Edition adventures because I don’t really KNOW the system. That’s not a problem here, as all you need to do is know your system’s human baseline and work out the math from the guidelines. While some of those challenges seem like they might be a bit much for a lower level adventuring party, the fact that there are built in ways for intelligent groups to sidestep them is a big plus: Play smart, don’t die. Like I said, not the world’s biggest dungeon crawl fan, but I like a lot about how this was laid out, with the options for extra exploration, the backstory of the dungeon, the tragic undertone to the whole thing and the generic rules set.

Curse of the Weaver Queen
by John R. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/06/2013 13:29:34

This adventure makes for a good old-school dungeon crawl that can be adapted to nearly any fantasy system with just a little math. With a nice selection of creatures, traps, and encounters that could just as easily be handled through roleplaying as they could through combat, the adventure is built on the premise that the GM will tailor it to his or her group’s particular style of play. Dark Outpost
by John R. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/09/2012 14:26:55

A wide-open sandbox setting with an over-arching plot, Dark Outpost is suited for any system but a GM should be ready to put a little work in converting monsters with the suggestions provided. The sprawling orbital station is mapped out and discussed in detail. Although I prefer my maps a little slicker, the product falls in line with the "old-school" feel and would be suited to those who prefer that approach to their games. Lich Dungeon - Level One
by John R. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/21/2012 07:30:45

This adventure is an excellent throwback to the old days, or it’s part of the new OSR movement, all depending on your perspective. It is easily adaptable to various iterations of D&D or Dungeon Crawl Classics Roleplaying Game, but is system neutral and the mechanics lend themselves to straightforward conversion.

This is the first level of Frank Mentzer’s megadungeon, and it’s quite sprawling with a variety of encounters, wandering monsters, and puzzles. Further levels would certainly be something to look forward to in the future but there is material here to last a group of old school delvers quite a while and cause a casualty or two (or six).

Dark Outpost
by Eric F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/12/2012 00:12:26

Dark Outpost is the latest effort by James Ward. Not simply a lonely out post in space adventure but a whole mini campaign in 88 pages. The layout & artwork are old school in the science fantasy tradition. The story is an interesting twist on some of the usual elements of science fantasy gaming. The game adventure is generic & could be plugged into any science fiction or science fantasy game system with ease. There are new pieces of equipment, new monsters, & a ton of maps in this one. This is really where the adventure shines offering what amounts to a fun solid night of play or several that could be stretched out the DM sees fit. The ideas here hearken back to the early days of many of James Ward's work for TSR but are much more entertaining. This is a great little adventure & very well done.
