Agent of the Imperium

High quality science fiction novel set in the Traveller5 universe. Very well edited. Crisply written. Clearly defined characters. Plot is well thought through. As a book, clean and clear formatting. Fold-out map is impressive quality. Overall well designed and successfully executed project in the Novel. Good value. Adds a great deal more information for story ideas that Referees will appreciate. Interest in Traveller5 is unnecessary to read and enjoy. Although in the tradition of classical sci-fi, the writing is Modern and surpasses the rather poor writing (not the ideas!) and characterizations in the writings of Asimov, Clarke, and others. An important contribution to Traveller OTU and science fiction generally. Contains world and other information for Traveller5 referees. Highly recommended also as an introduction to Traveller as a whole.

I greatly enjoyed reading this book. Granted, the fact that I love the Traveller RPG and have been a fan of Marc Miller's work with the game for decades colors my rating.

The story is believable and lays out some interesting situations and particular decisions that were made. The way the main character is shown, summoned due to the use of a specific "Decider" Wafer inserted into a wafer-jack makes for an interesting way to have a 250 page novel span centuries. The writing is decent, though I wouldn't describe it as high literary craft, it was easy to read and the two or three main characters (I'm thinking of Bland and Enna here) had distinct voices, the situations were interesting, and it kept me turning the page.

A couple of things that I wasn't thrilled about, that I feel weren't explained as well as I would have liked... First: The dreamlands/stadium sequences were a bit jarring in tone because I couldn't figure out if they actually serve a purpose or not. Perhaps this will pay off in a sequel? These don't detract from the book, but I think they are trying to humanize the protagonist and I am not sure they succeeded - I'm still ruminating on this. Second: The ending felt very abrupt - I felt like I was in the middle of an arc, not at the end. There was no warning that (SPOILER ALERT) the assassination of Margaret II was the END in terms of the story. The narration never gives a clue as to the extent of Jonathan's story and where it will end - there is no set up that tells the reader when to expect an end. It also doesn't help that the softcover has roughly 25 pages after the "end" of the story, so I expected another 25 pages of story only to be hit with what amount to several appendices for those unfamiliar with the Traveller Universe.

Despite those two flaws, I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to a sequel if Marc chooses to write one.

I have to admit I am biased, I'm a Traveller player and therefore am predisposed to like this book. The story is quite good and a fantastic idea for playing traveller (or any other sci-fi game for that matter) when you are short of players. All you need is one referee and one core player, new players can be slotted in at any time, for a one shot appearance or occasionally a recurring role.

The story is presented in numerous short periods of activity, separated by extended periods of time (much like game sessions). It's like an ongoing Traveller campaign that was planned for only two regular players and whoever else can be coaxed into playing for any given game session. The two regulars are the referee and one player who plays the main character, most other characters in the story are npcs, a few are pcs when players are available.

Btw.... this is not a game module this is a Traveller novel.

I found it to be a fascinating read, a brilliant idea for game play and an interesting addition to the OTU.

I had a great time reading this book. I liked how he visited a lot of the game setting without it feeling like I was reading someones game journal. The story was interesting and the characters fun to follow. I would buy another book from him with no fear.

This book is amazing. I've only recently gotten interested in Traveler and thought this would be a good into to the setting. Well, not only is it good for that, its also simply an outstanding sci-fi novel.

I'll probably re-read this soon, which is a rarity for me, and desperately hope for a sequel.

Buy this book! Read this book! You will not regret it.

This is an original and highly-enjoyable page-turner that gives some insight into the history and realpolitik of the OTU's Third Imperium with a very "in-universe" feel. A little bit Kurt Vonnegut, a little bit Isaac Asimov, all Marc Miller.

Brilliant! I bought this because I was curious to see how one of the great creators of games saw his world. Now I know and I want more!

Absolutely awesome creepy alien invasion novel, you'll love it if you enjoyed the original Alien but thought that a really inventive genetically engineered alien would be smarted and more devious. I've read this book multiple times over the years, and it never ceases to entertain. Rowley needs to return to his sci fi tales! Scan is clean and readable, although the cover is slightly marred....but it's the book you want. Get it!

One of the best creepy alien sci-fi novels I have ever read, and officially one of the few books I have now read 3 times. Glad to own it on PDF. The scan was pretty clean, all things considered. I wish Rowley would return to his sci fi Starhammer/Vang universe!
