Brave Men Run - A Novel of the Sovereign Era

Multiple File Formats

The alternative history fan favorite, now revised and expanded -- including a sneak peek at Pilgrimage, the second volume of the Charters Duology and the Sovereign Era storyworld!

April 18, 1985 – A startling revelation shocks a world already wound tight by the desperate tensions of the Cold War: super-humans exist... and they demand autonomy.

Until that day, high school sophomore Nate Charters thought he was just an outsider and self-proclaimed freak. His unusual appearance, hair-trigger reflexes, and overactive metabolism could have made him something special, but his differences and low self-esteem  marked him as a target for the jocks and popular kids long ago.

Now, just as his unique nature catches the eye of a self-assured older girl and the sinister attention of the enigmatic Dr. Brenhurst, Nate must solve the mystery of his origins and find his place in the world. Is he part of a remarkable, powerful new minority... or just a misfit among misfits?

He’d better find his answers quickly. A shadowy organization knows more about him than he could ever imagine. And they're closing in...

About The Revised, Expanded Edition:

The revised, expanded edition of Brave Men Run -- A Novel of the Sovereign Era incorporates the short story "Brenhurst's Tale -- Another View of Brave Men Run." Now you can see beyond Nate Charter's point of view and get the entire story in one place!

Additionally, every line of the text has been examined, refined, revised, and, where necessary, corrected so that it fits perfectly in the canon with the stories and events presented in The Sovereign Era: Year One and Pilgrimage. This revised, expanded edition is the definitive one.

Authors and Fans Rave About "Brave Men Run"

"The brilliance of Brave Men Run is not only in its vision, but its execution. Matthew Wayne Selznick spins a superhero story that transcends predictable ‘grim-n-gritty’ and ‘rock-’em-sock-’em’ conventions, capturing a realism and emotion rarely seen in the genre. Part Stan Lee, part John Hughes..!" -- J.C. Hutchins, author of the "7th Son" trilogy

"Selznick effortlessly spins a strong nostalgia for the ’80s with a fascinating alternate history where the superpowers wake up and may not be entirely hip on the idea of serving the rest of mankind. If Peter Parker had been one of the characters in 'The Breakfast Club,' you would have Brave Men Run. -- Mur Lafferty, author of "Playing for Keeps" and the "Heaven" series

"A fantastical novel written with that all-too-rare attention to character and drama… Selznick speaks softly — yet eloquently — and wields a very big literary stick." -- Mark Jeffrey, Ulysses Award-winning author of The Max Quick Series

"One of the best books I have ever read. I cant recommend this book highly enough." -- Brien B. Perkins (

"Must Read for any fan of super hero style fiction" -- Chrispian Burks (

"This book has the Power of Awesome" -- Christiana Ellis (

"Matt Selznick is in the top ten of the new genre writers this year and Brave Men Run is a book you don't want to miss." -- Paul Fischer (

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
